KMSKA LAAT

Alma Mahler - by Artist in Residence Elise Caluwaerts

Event
KMSKA LAAT
Date

Internationally renowned opera singer Elise Caluwaerts makes her entrance as Artist in Residence at KMSKA. In the 19th-century salon, Elise will pay tribute to Alma Mahler during KMSKA LAAT. A misunderstood composer, who stood in the shadow of her husband and composer Gustav Mahler, while she herself was a child prodigy.

A tribute to Alma Mahler

Elise Caluwaerts began her singing career as a baroque singer and toured internationally with Collegium Vocale Gent and Muziektheater Transparant. She later expanded her repertoire into the Romantic and contemporary repertoire and became a sought-after concert and opera singer. On Feb. 1, Elise previews her Artist in Residence fellowship with an ode to the misunderstood composer Alma Mahler.

Who was Alma Mahler

Alma Mahler-Werfel, created more than 100 songs and several instrumental compositions. Only seventeen songs have stood the test of time. As a woman, her exceptional talent was not recognized during her lifetime.

During Elise's performance, the figure of Alma Mahler bridges the gap with the numerous underappreciated visual artists of the time.  A story of powerful women, art, love and commitment.

Alma & Elise

Elise Caluwaerts released the complete works of Alma Mahler earlier this year "Alma, Meine Seele: Complete Songs Of Alma Mahler (1879-1964). Thus, she contributes to the recognition of Alma's work and aspires to make it part of the canon. On Feb. 1, she will perform it in the evening, 19th-century salon here at KMSKA.
